Black Salt Coreuption is a one on one 3-D arena fighting game made by Taktyl Studios based in Las Vegas, Nevada. Black Salt Coreuption is taking a new turn to other 2-D arena fighting games. The game allows for a 2-D but with a 3-D degree of freedom and camera movement. The gameplay is hard to learn as there isn’t a tutorial yet and there isn’t a list of moves for the fighter you’re using at the pause menu in the middle of the fight. These mechanics of the game and many others were what made my decision for this game. The game is from my understanding still having updates and features added to it before its release later this year. These features and updates if added could very well conflict with this review of the game as I have only played it as it is now. With that being said, let me share with you my thoughts of the game. This is my review of Black Salt Coreuption.
Let’s start out with the fighters in the game. The game is your typical fighting game. You have different fighters you can fight with, learn their specific attacks, combos and go on to be the best. But, that’s where this game loses me. There is nothing special about these characters.
Black Salt has ten different characters to choose from. There are different color variations to the characters but that brought little to no difference in the fighting abilities of the character. The color variations seemed to just bring different costume options for the characters. The different color options seemed nice but pointless as this wasn’t a game that needed the extra three other colors to make it more fun. Each character does have a unique trait about themselves. For example, there is a character who has handguns. While using this character there was no option for a long-range attack with her guns. The guns were used in combination with something that seemed like a throw. It didn’t make much sense to me as a character with guns should be able to use at least some of the bullets in them for a long range attack.
Out of the ten characters in the game, there are a lot of them without a ranged attack. Going back to specific characters, there is one that stuck out to me. This character is a big, dragon-like monster with claws and horns to match. This character’s attacks, swords. The character with claws, horns, and fangs uses swords to fight. The swords also look like the hook swords used by Shaolin monks at the temples, popularized in pop culture movie media. The connection of the swords to this dragon monster perplexes me.
The next thing I’d like to touch on is the story of the single-player mode. There is none. Games, even fighting games such as this one, can come with a single player story mode to heighten the characters in the game. In Black Salt Coreuption there isn’t a story mode to this game yet. The story mode if there is one to come in the future, would then bring much-needed text and substance to these characters. Without the costumes and person or being, they are supposed to be, there are little differences for these characters to stand out with. The game as it stands right now needs some kind of background for these characters for the players to invest time into the game.
The online option the game has is called versus mode. The versus mode allows players to play against players through a matchmaking system. After several failed attempts, I was able to get into a match but there were too much disconnect and interruption of the gameplay that I ended up leaving the match. The time it took to get into that one match was close to ten minutes of waiting for an online match. Granted the game is still in development and there aren’t too many people playing the game to match with. Both modes have a solid starting ground to work with, but there needs to be more progression to become a fighting force in the eSports arena.
Verdict: Black Salt Coreuption is a game that needs work to become a contender for the fighting esports arena. It needs to figure out a little more on how to work the camera at better angles with their 3-D spaces. The characters need some dialogue and voice work. They could also use some variations when it comes to fighting stances or if the player wants to fight up close or at a distance. It is mixing the great one on one battles from titles of Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter with the 3-D spaces of titles like Dragonball Xenoverse and Naruto to Boruto: Shinobi Striker. The mixture of these styles is not yet complete and need some work to be a contender for the genre.
Black Salt Coreuption Review
Good Foundation for a great fighting game
3-D camera aspect interesting
Characters need more substance
Music is the same throughout the entire process of selecting a match
There are no variation options for the costumes or fighting style of the fighters
Fighting seemed slow and very stagnant
