The PC development team at Treyarch are bringing mods to Black Ops 3 in 2016, which includes support for creating maps and game modes within the shooter. We got a chance to speak with Cesar Stastny of Treyarch’s PC development team about the announcement, and it sounds like there are big plans in the works when it comes to Black Ops 3 PC mods.
PC Mods for Black Ops 3 will not launch alongside the game in November, but a closed alpha is slated for March 2016. What details we were given include the ability create maps and game modes, among other features. Black Ops 3 modders will also be provided with Unranked Dedicated Server Files and tools to run servers with modded content, and the game will feature an Unranked Server Browser for discovering servers with said modded content for players who want that experience instead of vanilla Black Ops 3.
While Treyarch is holding many of their cards close to the vest regarding mods, it’s pretty clear that this would be a huge boon for Call of Duty PC players if this started a trend for the series. Details are slim, so it’s unclear how Steam Workshop might play into this, and whether these tools or mods will apply to cooperative multiplayer modes like Zombies as well.
Timing and details for community participation in the closed alpha test are forthcoming. Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 is slated to release on November 6th, 2015 on PC and consoles.
