Black Lightning Star Charlbi Dean Died Of Sepsis

A spokesperson from the New York City Office said on Wednesday, December 21, that Charlbi died of bacterial sepsis. They also ruled her death as an accident. Black Lightning star Charlbi Dean died at 32 from an unexpected illness while in New York City.

The CDC defines sepsis as a “life-threatening medical emergency which is the body’s extreme response to an infection. It happens when an infection already present in the body triggers a chain reaction throughout the body.”

Charlbi played Syonide in the first season of Black Lightning alongside Cress Williams, China Anne McClain, and Nafessa Williams. She was also renowned for her role in the Spud films, where she starred alongside Troye Sivan.

The former model was highly lauded for her role as Yaya in the 2022 film Triangle of Sadness. The film also featured stars such as Harris Dickinson and Woody Harrelson and eventually won a Palme d’Or. Charlbi celebrated the movie’s big Cannes Film Festival win via Instagram in May.

The actress is survived by her fiancé Luke Volker, a South African model. The two did not get to say their vows before she passed away.

Celebrities Mourn Charlbi Dean’s Death

When news of Charlbi Dean’s death broke out in August, co-star Troye Sivan reacted with sadness. The Youth singer shared Charlbi’s picture via his Instagram Story alongside a broken heart emoji. Several more celebrity friends took to social media to commemorate their late friend.

Nina Dobrev also paid homage to Charlbi on her Instagram Story, writing, “an angel has gone to heaven far too soon. Rest in peace, Charlbi.” She accompanied the post with a video of her and the Blood in the Water actress. “May heaven be all you ever imagined,” she wrote at the time.

Helena Beato recounted how Charlbi always kept her company “on the silliest errand.” Helena mentioned that the late star knew how to make moments count and called her “a beautiful woman and a beautiful soul who always lit up the room.”
