2020’s Birds of Prey saw Harley Quinn, Huntress, and Black Canary team up to fight a crime boss. Now it seems that one of these characters is getting their own project. According to Cinelinx, Black Canary will star in her own HBO Max project. Right now it’s not clear whether this means a TV show or a movie.
Jurnee Smollett is set to reprise her role as Black Canary. She has previously acted in projects such as True Blood, Underground, and Lovecraft Country. Another Lovecraft Country alumnus is rumored to be working on Black Canary as well. Cinelinx states that Misha Green will write the Black Canary movie or TV show. She has previously written for Underground (as well as being the co-creator) and was a writer and executive director for Lovecraft Country.

In Birds of Prey, Black Canary is a singer for Black Mask’s nightclub. She is soon made to be his driver and lackey as well. This doesn’t last long, however, as she hates and betrays the villain. She then teams up with Huntress and Harley Quinn to form the Birds of Prey and to take on Black Mask.
It’s still not yet known whether this Jurnee Smollett’s Black Canary HBO project will be a sequel or prequel to Birds of Prey. If it’s a prequel, we could see how she met Black Mask and Zsasz. A sequel could mean fellow Birds of Prey members make appearances in the project.
HBO Max and DC
HBO Max is home to a good chunk of DC’s content. They have TV shows, live-action films, and animated films. They’ve also previously released an HBO Max exclusive DC film. Zack Snyder’s Justice League debuted on HBO Max earlier this year. It seems that Black Canary could get the same treatment.
