The official trailer for Birds of Prey (And The Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) has dropped. It focuses on Harley’s life post-Joker as the crime duo has split apart. Margot Robbie will reprise her role from Suicide Squad in this new movie based on the DC Comics characters.
In the trailer we see Harley teaming up with Huntress (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), Black Canary (Jurnee Smollett-Bell), Renee Montoya (Rosie Perez), and Cassandra Cain (Ella Jay Basco). Ewan McGregor, well known for playing Obi-Wan Kenobi in Star Wars along with an award-winning performance in Fargo and memorable roles in Trainspotting, Moulin Rouge!, and The Ghost Writer, will serve as the movie’s main antagonist. He will be playing Black Mask, a noted Batman-universe crime lord.
The trailer shows a great deal of action, humor, and beautiful visuals. Margot Robbie’s performance as Harley Quinn was a show-stealer in Suicide Squad, where she co-starred with Will Smith. It’s apparent from the Birds of Prey trailer that this takes place after Suicide Squad but otherwise seems to be unrelated to the other DC movies. The recent standalone film, Joker, with Joaquin Phoenix, is not connected to this movie. Jared Leto took up the role of the Joker in Suicide Squad, but it doesn’t appear that he will be in this movie.
Robbie has previously stated that the movie will be rated R, telling Vogue:
Deadpool and Logan were also both R-rated (although male-led) and did exceptionally well in theaters. The film is directed by award-winner Cathy Yan, who also has a career as a writer and producer.
Birds of Prey (And The Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) is from Warner Bros. Pictures and will hit theaters February 7th, 2020.
