Gail Simone, well known for writing DC’s Birds of Prey comic series, wants to write a solo movie for Black Canary. Simone took to Twitter to express her interest.

All I am saying is Black Canary solo movie starring @jurneesmollett.

And I write it.

And it has Huntress.

And Savant and Creote.

Black Canary will make her big-screen debut next month in Birds of Prey: And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn. Jurnee Smollett-Bell (Friday Night Lights) is portraying the DC heroine. Huntress, the second character mentioned in the tweet, is also making her debut. Mary Elizabeth Winstead (Scott Pilgrim vs. the World) will portray her. Savant and Creote, however, will not appear. They were co-created by Simone and debuted in Birds of Prey #56 (2003) when she took over the series.

Whether anything will come from Simone’s interest is anyone’s guess, but stranger things have happened. And this wouldn’t be completely out of the ordinary for the DCEU. In May of 2019, it was announced that Tom King would be co-writing New Gods with director Ava DuVernay. King has worked on several DC books, including the critically adored Mister Miracle. That series dealt heavily with the New Gods of warring planets Apokolips and New Genesis. Perhaps bringing in comic creators will give the DCEU an edge the MCU doesn’t have. But it also depends on how the Birds of Prey movie does.

While Black Canary isn’t as popular among mainstream audiences as the likes of Wonder Woman or Batman, she is one of the founding members of the team. In fact, she’s the only character in the movie who can make that claim. The Birds of Prey debuted in a 1995 one-shot and starred Black Canary and Oracle. She’s an expert in multiple forms of martial arts but can also create ultrasonic (and incredibly powerful) vibrations when she screams.

In addition to Smollett-Bell and Winstead, Birds of Prey stars Ewan McGregor, Rosie Perez, and Margot Robbie returning in the role of Harley Quinn. The film opens on February 7th, though only time will tell if it leads to something more.
