When Mass Effect 3 arrives at the newly announced delayed date sometime in 2012, it will be leaner and stronger than ever before. If you enjoyed the game’s evolution from Mass Effect 1 to Mass Effect 2 and the streamlining of many of the game’s RPG features, you’ll be happy to hear that Bioware is aiming to enrich the role playing mechanics of Mass Effect 3 without overdoing it on the unnecessary data.
A Senior designer at Bioware recently sat down with OXM to explain this new design philosophy.
“We want to enrich the role-playing aspects of the game, while making sure that they’re always meaningful in combat,” Norman told the magazine. “We don’t want to have any meaningless behind-the-scenes stat games, where the output is very minor in combat. Every single thing you do has a real impact in the battle.” that’s not to say there are going to be these major changes in the game, she continued. “We got combat the way we wanted it for ME2, so you’re going to feel right at home straight away. But there are so many subtle improvements that you’ll miss them if you go back.”
Subtle enhancements to the Mass Effect 2 combat system are a good thing. Mass Effect 2 seemed to strike the balance perfectly between action and RPG, which was a change welcomed by many fans of the first game. Unfortunately we won’t be getting Mass Effect 3 this holiday season as originally planned.
