Pokémon Scarlet & Violet attempts to change traditional typing mechanics by introducing Terastallization, a method of changing any Pokémon to a singular type and powering up moves of that type. However, certain type combinations remain very powerful in Pokémon Scarlet & Violet. They can provide offensive flexibility, and the ability to counter each individual type’s weaknesses. Here are some of the best type combinations in Pokémon Scarlet & Violet.

Best Defensive Type Combinations in Pokémon Scarlet & Violet

Bug and Steel

Bug-Type Pokémon tend to be known for their general weakness. Early game gym leaders, such as Katy, typically specialize in this type. However, when combined with the Steel-type, Bug-type Pokémon can quickly become difficult to take down without access to Fire-type moves. They possess an immunity to poison type moves, and resist seven other types: Bug, Dragon, Fairy, Grass, Ice, Psychic, and Steel. One notable Pokémon that can be obtained in Pokémon Scarlet & Violet with a Bug and Steel-Type is Scizor.

Ghost and Dark

While neither the Ghost or the Dark-Type tend to be inherently defensive, together they counter a lot of each type’s weaknesses. This type combination gains immunity to three separate types of moves: Fighting, Normal, and Psychic, and it only has one weakness: Fairy-Type moves. It is a rare combination, however, with Sableye being one of the most notable.

Steel and Fairy

This type combination can become a shield against powerful Dragon-type Pokémon, being immune to both Dragon-Type and Poison-Type moves. They also have resistances to a whopping nine other types of moves: Bug, Dark, Fairy, Grass, Flying, Ice, Normal, Psychic, and Rock. Other than having to watch out for Fire and Ground-Types, they don’t have very much else to worry about. One fan-favorite Generation IX Pokémon, Tinkaton, has this dual typing.

Best Offensive Type Combinations in Pokémon Scarlet & Violet

Water and Ground

This typing combination is traditionally one of the most powerful, particularly against defensive power houses of the Steel and Rock-Type. They have access to super effective moves on four other types as well: Electric, Fire, Ground, and Poison. The main caveat with this type combination is to be careful of its four times weakness to Grass-Type moves, a somewhat common type. In Paldea, you can still obtain Quagsire, a popular Water and Ground-Type staple, by trading a Paldean Wooper for a traditional Wooper at the fountain of Cascarrafa.

Water and Flying

Gyrados remains a powerful Pokémon in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, in part because of its dual Water and Flying-Type. This typing combination has access to super effective moves on six other Pokémon types: Bug, Fighting, Fire, Grass, Ground, and Rock. The big, red flag with this type combination, however, is its four times weakness to Electric-Type moves.

Steel and Flying

While they have weakness to Fire and Electric-Types, the combination of Steel and Flying-Type can deal super effective damage to six different types: Bug, Grass, Fairy, Fighting, Ice, and Rock. They also have two immunities and many other resistances to boot. Rookidee is a fairly common Pokémon found in Paldea that fully evolves into the Steel and Flying type, Corviknight.
