Not many would go out of their way to use a Houndoom in Pokémon Go. It’s a decent Dark and Fire-type Pokémon and is a suitable choice for those looking for a pick to round out their Great or Ultra League team. But what makes it an even more potent option is being able to Mega-Evolve Houndoom into Mega Houndoom, amplifying its abilities. That will be the main appeal for trainers who want to use it in raids and battles. What is the best moveset for Houndoom?
Houndoom is a Dark and Fire-type Pokémon. It’s weak to Water, Fighting, Rock, and Ground-type attacks, but it’s perfect for taking down Bug, Grass, Steel, Ice, Ghost, and Psychic-types. A Houndoom is a good choice to protect specific choices in your roster. It’s always better if you have a Mega Houndoom available, though.
Here are all of the available move choices for Houndoom.
Fast moves
- Snarl – Dark-type (10 DPS)Fire Fang – Fire-type (14 DPS)
Charge moves
- Crunch – Dark-type (21 DPS)Flamethrower – Fire-type (31 DPS)Fire Blast – Fire-type (33 DPS)Foul Play – Dark-type (35 DPS)
Of the fast moves, fire fang does the most damage. However, snarl can produce a bit more energy each time it attacks, giving you more opportunities to fire your charge move each time, Snarl is a bit slower, though, but the overall energy generation should make up for it.
Like most Pokémon battles, it comes down to what type of charge move you want to give your Houndoom and your Mega Houndoom. Foul play, another Dark-type move, has the highest damage output of the choices. Snarl, side-by-side with foul play, would be doubling down on two Dark-type moves. If you can spare the Star Dust to add a second charge move, choose flamethrower. While it has a lower DPS, you can use it far more often than fire blast.
With snarl being your fast move choice, and foul play and flamethrower for your charge moves, you’re good to go. Houndoom might not be your first choice in the Great or Ultra League, but it’s a reliable raid option. Even more so as Mega Houndoom.
