There’s a lot of ways to raise your killstreak in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, but the best and most reliable way is to load up an assault rifle and spray everything in your nearby vicinity with lead. Ever since gaming companies realized they could make money by letting gamers get their hands on wartime activities where they could shoot each other, the assault rifle has been a staple of the genre.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is no different. Jump into multiplayer, and you’ll find more assault rifles than you can shake a dismembered leg at, but which ones should you keep in your arsenal and which ones should you altogether avoid? This guide hopes to answer that question for you.

FAL

Easily the worst of the bunch, the FAL kicks like a mule, meaning that you’re going to find it very difficult to down anything with this weapon unless it’s stood about a foot away from you and then it’s still a crapshoot. It doesn’t help that its rate of fire is pretty lousy as well. Avoid at all costs unless you really like a challenge or are a Call of Duty veteran from way back.

FN SCAR 17

Another assault rifle with enough kick to break down a wall, the FN SCAR 17, also suffers from a slow fire rate. Still, if you can get to grips with it, or if you’re familiar with it from other iterations of the game, you’ll soon realize that it can do a lot of damage over long-range, so it’s a much better option to the FAL.

ODEN

It might be another weapon that suffers from a slow fire rate, and considering these are all supposed to be assault rifles, that is quite surprising, but it does pack enough wallop to make up for it. It’s pretty darn accurate as well, which means that as long as you have something to im at, you’re guaranteed to lay it out.

KILO 141

It’s an untamed beast that will buck in your hand like and drag your barrel all over the place, but it’s lethal at close range, so it doesn’t matter if you’re struggling to control the recoil. Get yourself caught in an ambush, and you should be able to fight your way out of that corner with little to no trouble at all.

M4A1

If you add the right components to the M4A1, you can turn a rather unspectacular assault rifle into a pretty decent weapon. Just make sure you update the sights and the stock, and you should have a light-weight killing machine that will serve you well in mid-range combat. If you don’t, then it’s a tad, meh.

M13

The M13 is pretty similar to the M4A1 in that it’s a perfect way to cut down other players at medium range, and that’s without you having to do anything to it to improve its overall performance. Just don’t bother using its default sight as it’s a load of iron rubbish, and you won’t be able to hit the side of a barn if you use it.

AK-47

The Grand-Daddy of all assault rifles, the AK-47, is still one the best and most reliable weapons in real life and any form of FPS. It does suffer from the same recoil problems as a few of the others in this guide, but once you get your head around how to combat it, you’ll be spraying down hordes of enemies along with the best of them.

FR 556

The FR 556 is the best assault rifle in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. It’s a precision weapon that will kill anything in the room, and if you find yourself caught between a rock and a very well-armed hard place, then the FR 556 will get you out of it as fast as you can hit reload. It also comes with burst fire, which means that if you can hit it, and with this amount of accuracy you can, then it won’t be getting back up, ever.
