Kentaro Miura, the author of the Berserk manga series, has passed away at age 54. He died on May 6th as a result of acute aortic dissection, a condition that affects blood flow to the organs. The official Twitter account of publisher Hakusensha confirms his death and the surrounding details. They also revealed that Miura’s family had already held a private memorial service for him. In their statement, the publisher writes,

A Tribute to An Amazing Series and Kentaro Miura
Miura’s most famous and highly regarded work Berserk, first started publication in 1989. Before then, he worked as an assistant to Georgie Morikawa (the author of popular boxing anime Hajime no Ippo). Later on, he founded his own studio with his manga assistants, named Studio Gaga. The most recent work from this studio is Doruakni, which is another fantasy manga based on Mesopotamia and Greek mythology.
Since its release, Berserk has gained a loyal and enthusiastic fanbase all throughout various television shows, anime films, video games, and merchandise. The dark fantasy manga told the story of “Guts,” a mercenary swordsman, and his search for identity and revenge. Berserk has been praised by many critics and fans for its unapologetic, brutal storytelling and its amazing art style.
With the passing of Kentaro Miura, an incredible artist and storyteller have been lost. Because of the Berserk’s serialization being ongoing, Miura’s manga will most likely remain unfinished.
