According to THR, Benedict Cumberbatch will reprise his role as Doctor Strange in Sony and Marvel’s Spider-Man 3.

THR reports that Strange will act as a mentor to Tom Holland’s Peter Parker, much like the roles Robert Downey Jr.’s Tony Stark and Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury played in the first two movies. Benedict Cumberbatch will be joined by star Tom Holland, Zendaya, Marisa Tomei, Jacob Batalon, and Tony Revolori. Director Jon Watts will also return to helm the third installment.

Will Spider-Man 3 Introduce A Live-Action Spider-Verse?

It has been said that Doctor Strange And The Multiverse Of Madness will lean on Marvel’s multiverse. Hence the ridiculous title. Due to that, many on the internet are speculating that Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange playing a part in Spider-Man 3 means that we’ll see some sort of Spider-Verse in the movie. However, this fan theory actually picked up some steam last week with another Spider-Man 3 casting.

This strange news (I regret the pun already) comes only one week after it was revealed that Jamie Foxx would be playing Electro in the upcoming Spidey flick. Previously, Foxx played Electro in 2014’s The Amazing Spider-Man 2. Shortly after the story broke, Foxx sent out an Instagram post saying “Tell Spidey let’s run it back!” and teased that we may get some sort of Spider-Verse in the upcoming film. The Instagram post has since been deleted. But, industry insider Daniel Richtman was able to grab a screenshot of the post. You can see it below:

Nothing has been confirmed yet but, it does seem that Sony and Marvel are gearing up for some sort of Spider-Verse movie. Either that or both of these castings are purely coincidental. Regardless, it will be a while before we ever see the still-untitled Spider-Man film. Currently, Spider-Man 3 is set to hit theaters on December 17th, 2021.
