Deep Water is based on a novel of the same name by Patricia Highsmith. Highsmith’s work has been adapted into several movies over the years. Some of her works include Strangers on a Train, which was famously adapted by the legendary Alfred Hitchcock, and The Talented Mr. Ripley.
The movie adaptation of Deep Water features Ben Affleck and Ana De Armas as Vic and Melinda Van Allen, a couple in a loveless marriage who play mind games with each other. However, these games and their lives quickly spin out of control when people around them start to turn up dead. This adaptation of Highsmith’s work comes from writers Zach Helm and Sam Levinson.
Deep Water also features the return of director Adrian Lyne. Lyne is known for directing several hit movies like Fatal Attraction, Flashdance, Indecent Proposal, and Jacob’s Ladder. He last directed a film back in 2002 while working on Unfaithful.
According to the report from Deadline, the decision to change Deep Water to a streaming release largely stems from the lack of a theatrical marketplace for adult audiences. Several recent adult audience films like House of Gucci and West Side Story have underperformed at the box office while more family-oriented films like Spider-Man: No Way Home are projected for significant box office performance.
