The 2020 revival of the classic platformer, Battletoads, has officially crossed over 1 million unique players. Released just a few months ago, the new rendition of the classic toad action was a brand revival success. Retaining the charm and love of the original titles’ attitude, the new rendition breathed new life into the previously forgotten frogs. With only a few games lasting until the late 90s, the toads have not been heard of since then. While the memes have kept the name alive, Battletoads 2020 is a game truly worth the legacy. Published in a blog post and YouTube video describing their various statistics and accolades, Rare has collected some interesting statistics concerning players’ choices.

Boasting the impressive million player mark, it’s great to see Battletoads get the recognition and love it deserves. That number is, of course, dwarfed by the 80 million deaths the toads have suffered in the past 2 months of release. Players even seem to prefer the brash nature of Rash’s insane inferiority complex. Besides some budgetary concerns expressed in the tongue-in-cheek humor, the title was a faithful representation of what a modern platformer genre splicer should look like. They even congratulated Fuzzyness who is the world record holder for the 100% run on the easiest difficulty. With an impressive run under 2 hours, it’s clear as to how optimized the title has become in the niche speedrunning community for Battletoads.

There’s certainly a special charm in the new release by Rare, reimagining the old properties into new experiences. They’ve even teamed up with Titan Comics to produce a whole new slew of toadally awesome action with their Lost Adventures series. The future seems bright for the admittedly dark past the Battletoads have encountered before. Nonetheless, they’ve sprung back on their feet to high praise and on multiple platforms. Battletoads is a short but sweet adventure best experienced with 2 friends, now available on Xbox Game Pass or Steam.
