Battlefield 4 will usher in the era of Frostbite 3, the next iteration of the developer’s powerful game engine.  It’s responsible for sights and sounds of Battlefield 4, the cool weather effects, destruction, and other new features that’ll arrive with the game this fall.

In this recently released developer diary, DICE highlights some of these new features found in the Frostbite 3 engine, as well as some of the game specific uses for the engine.  One of the more interesting features is a Battlefield 4 specific use of the Frostbite 3 engine called “Levolution”.

This levolution is described as “a way that you can drastically change a multiplayer map into something different.  It can be anything from a big building collapsing, or to a dam breaking, or any type of big game changer to a level.”  If you’ve been following along at home, you’ve likely already seen this massive scale destruction in Battlefield 4, namely when the massive skyscraper gets leveled during a multiplayer match. This is levolution at work.  Players shouldn’t be surprised if we see more of this included in Battlefield 4 when it arrives later this year, apparently it’s something that DICE has been working on to differentiate the shooter from the competition.

You can check out all of the features of Battlefied 4’s Frostbite 3, including the new Levolution, in the video below.  Battlefield 4 is set to arrive on the Xbox One, PlayStation 4, PC, Xbox 360 and PS3 on October 29th.
