EA and DICE have finally revealed the gameplay trailer of the brand-new Battlefield 2042 in today’s Xbox E3 2021 live stream. The game will launch on October 22, 2021, for PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. But last-gen consoles’ maximum number of players will be limited to 64 while current-gen consoles and PC can play with up to 128-players on one map.

Previously, well-known Call of Duty and Battlefield leaker Tom Henderson said that Battlefield 2042 will be released with many new features. The game indeed will launch with cross-play (only for PC and PlayStation consoles), 128 player maps for Conquest and Breakthrough modes, and a huge overhaul to the Levolution environmental destruction system including dynamic weather system and dangerous environmental hazards. However, talking to Polygon, DICE has denied that the game will be getting a free-to-play battle royale mode. DICE general manager Oskar Gabrielson also confirmed that there’s no single-player campaign like what the company did ever since Battlefield Bad Company as well.

Instead of battle royale though, the game will have Hazard Zone, a completely new squad-based game mode that EA and DICE are still keeping as a secret. For now, feast your eyes on the teaser of the upcoming chaos in the gameplay trailer below.

As its title suggests, the latest Battlefield is taking place in the fictional future of 2042. Extreme weather events and resource conflicts have shifted the balance of global power. And amid the crisis, both the United States and Russia went into an all-out war while a mix of Non-Patriated combat veterans form independent groups known as Task Forces join both sides.

In-game, you will no longer play as the traditional four Battlefield classes but instead as Specialists. Every Specialist will have one unique Specialty and Trait, but the rest of the loadout like weapons and attachments will be fully customizable. For example, the recon Specialist Wikus “Casper” Van Daele can deploy a drone to spot enemies and disorient them with EMP as well as utilizing a movement sensor to keep himself safe from an enemy ambush. Others like Webster Mackay can shoot a grappling hook for extra mobility options. You will also be able to call in for a vehicle drop on the fly instead of waiting for them to spawn.
