Larian Studios have proven with the recent and impeccable Divinity series that they understand the fundamentals of making a CRPG. That’s why fans were happy to hear they took the helm on Baldur’s Gate 3 in E3 2019 and at the Google conference of all places. We were even lucky enough to get an entire hour of gameplay footage and the opening cinematic ar Pax East 2020. While the game is looking impeccable, things aren’t looking good for PS4 and Xbox one users.
The News:
This naturally brings one to today’s news. Over at Eurogamer, they spoke to Larian Studios David Walgrave. Mr. Walgrave is an executive producer on Baldur’s Gate 3 and crucial in its development. While we will take the essential part, the interview itself is worth checking out if you want an eye into production. One of the most exciting parts is this question:
They further elaborated that it could potentially run but would require some toned down textures making it not “look as cool anymore.”
Walgrave: Mmhmm! I don’t think that current-gen consoles would be able to run it. There’s a lot of technical upgrades and updates that we did to our engine, and I don’t know if it would be capable of being able to actually run on those things.
Future of Baldurs Gate 3:
Baldur’s Gate will be released simultaneously in early access for Google Stadia and Steam. While Stadia doesn’t have an equivalent word, it’s the same thing in practice. In the same interview, David Walgrave said that the focus was on PC and Stadia, but they do often make their titles multiplatform to maximize the audience. This essentially implies that their potential focus on next-gen consoles will be dependant on how it is received on Stadia and Steam, like their previous title, Divinity. He further elaborated that while Baldur’s Gate 3 has a bigger budget, it also has higher expectations. “I think we’ll work on it, but lets first make it for PC. Let’s make it work.”
This is an excellent way of seeing the future of the title, and one can only hope it can live up to the precedent set by the original back in 1998. If Larian stays behind it, I for one will have some faith in it
