Leveling is slow but rewarding in Baldur’s Gate 3.
Like any RPG, the ability to level up is a huge part of Baldur’s Gate 3. Because the game is using the Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition ruleset, the level cap is not as high as it is in traditional video game RPGs like Skyrim or The Witcher, and the real maximum level isn’t even obtainable yet because the game is still in early access. Still, your characters can learn powerful new abilities and grow significantly even with only a few level ups. Here’s how to level up in Baldur’s Gate 3.
How to Level Up in Baldur’s Gate 3
When your characters earn enough experience points from completing quests and slaying monsters, they will be able to level up and gain new abilities. You’ll receive a notification telling you a character has gained a level, and a white plus sign will appear on your character’s portrait in the lower left-hand corner of the screen. Click the white plus to be taken to the leveling screen.
Here, you’ll be able to decide how your character will improve. You don’t get a whole lot of new things during the early levels, so don’t expect to make grand changes to your characters or their playstyles when you’re just starting out. Still, you can choose new spells for certain classes and even choose a subclass once you reach level 3. Subclasses are when the main classes really start to come into their own, so think carefully about how you want your characters to perform in combat and take note of your party composition so you know which weaknesses you need to cover with new characters. Leveling up can be overwhelming for new players, especially those without any experience with Dungeons & Dragons, but you should get the hang of it after a while.
Baldur’s Gate 3 is available now in early access on Steam and Google Stadia. The game’s full release will happen after at least one year in early access development.
