The early access phase for Baldur’s Gate 3 has finally released and it’s the Dungeons and Dragons experience players have been waiting for. But for fans new and old, the arrival of the Githyanki race might be a surprise. For those of you wondering who these yellow warriors with pet dragons are or what builds are best for them, look no further.
Who Are the Githyanki in Baldur’s Gate 3?
The Githyanki are Astral Plane dwellers who used to suffer as slaves at the hand of the Mind Flayers. They were used as forced labor to form the backbone of the Mind Flayer empire after several millennia of selective breeding. Soon enough, the Githyanki grew resistances to the Mind Flayers’ mind control and started their rebellion.
Their rebellion caused the fall of the Mind Flayer empire and to this day, they have dedicated their time to building their own empire and harassing the remainder of the Mind Flayer species. They soon looked for allies and allied with the Red Dragons.
The Githyanki usually stay in the Astral Plane, but they visit the Material Plane— where Baldur’s Gate is located— to raid settlements and set up creches. Since aging is impossible in the Astral Plane, creches are where new Githyanki are born and trained to fit into the militaristic society.

The Githyanki race attributes are +1 Intelligence and +2 Strength. They also get proficiency in Light and Medium armor as well as Short and Longswords. These traits make them excellent for the Fighter class. With it, they will get more proficiencies in weapons as well as heavy armor, and a higher strength score. At level three, when players can choose their subclass, the Eldritch Knight is a great choice for Githyanki fighters. They still get the bonus of being a tank while having some magic up their sleeve.
However, if players are wanting to wield spells instead of a sword, Githyanki are also effective Warlocks and Wizards. This is because of their proficiencies in armor, as Githyanki can wear armor without canceling their spellcasting ability. They can embrace the chaos their magic can wreak without suffering from the squishiness of the Wizard and Warlock classes.
