One week ago today, the Game Awards celebrated everything games through various awards and announcements. It was a good time, something I watched with a couple of friends. We had fun hyping up games (and maybe laughing here and there admittedly). One game that showed up is Back 4 Blood, a co-op zombie shooter from ex-Left 4 Dead developers. While it’s not Left 4 Dead 3, it looks to be just the spiritual successor we’ve all been dreaming of. Now, one week later, the team is celebrating the launch of the closed alpha with a fresh gameplay demo. You can check out the said demo on their official Twitch page.

Back 4 Blood takes place in an alternate universe to our own, one where a parasitic worm has infected most of the world. There isn’t much of humanity left, but the last remnants are strong fighters who will stop at nothing to put an end to the threat. One group of humans is known as the Cleaners, the 4 person team you control through your Back 4 Blood adventures. As a chosen member, it’s up to you to make your way through the various levels, ending the infected horrors however you see fit. If you’d like to learn more about the game, you can check out its official site.

While I don’t have the time to watch the full 30-minute reveal, there’s definitely plenty to dig into. For one, we know Back 4 Blood holds a much more realistic approach when it comes to the various animations and battles. Each gun seems quite accurate, with zombie guts flying all over the place. Exactly what you want from a Left 4 Dead-style game. While the designs of zombies are a bit less detailed than one could hope, it’s important to note this is just the closed alpha. That can change rather quickly.
