Awesome Games Done Quick, an annual video game speedrunning marathon raising money for charity, is going online-only in 2021. The event will begin Jan. 3 and run through January 10th.

Not only will fans miss out on the experience of a live venue, but participants will as well. Participants, referred to as “runners” by Games Done Quick, will compete from their own homes during the event. Fans of GDQ know this is how Summer Games Done Quick was done last month. Just like then, the live-streamed broadcast will happen from a studio. Check out the video below to get an idea of how that went last month during the start of SGDQ.

Awesome Games Done Quick Going Online-Only in 2021

In case you’re worried a strictly online event may mean not much money will be raised for charity, last month’s Summer Games Done Quick online event raised more than $2.3 million for Doctors Without Borders. The event was delayed because of Coronavirus, but clearly that didn’t stop people from donating. GDQ also hosted an online-only event in April to raise funds for Coronavirus relief. Corona Relief Done Quick, as it was called, raised more than $400,000.

Director of Marketing and Business Development of Games Done Quick, Kasumi Yogi, expressed hope to one day return to in-person events.
