The developers of Marvel’s Avengers game are reversing a controversial decision that allowed players to purchase two types of items that would increase XP and currency.

The Avengers game hasn’t had the best reputation. With a shaky launch and mixed reviews, the game had to climb its way up slowly and build up a small but dedicated fanbase. However, all that goodwill appeared to have got up in smokes when Square Enix and Crystal Dynamics announced that they will be implementing paid experience boosters in the game’s items shop.

Fans were very vocally upset by this as it not only makes the game pay-to-win, but it also goes against the developers’ word that microtransactions will be cosmetic only. The backlash was bad enough to force the team to remove Hero’s Catalysts and Fragment Extractors from the in-game store.

Hero’s Catalyst and Fragment Extractor are items that have been in the game since launch—both items increased how much XP characters will earn during missions or increased how much Fragment currency characters will receive. The message that is shared on Twitter has the team apologize to the fanbase.
