After a long and hard-fought battle, Avengers: Endgame has overtaken Avatar to become the highest-grossing film of all time. Making a whopping 2.79 billion dollars, Avengers: Endgame barely squeaked past Avatar with the use of a theatrical re-release that gave it the extra edge to gain some extra sales. Now with the release of Spider-Man: Far From Home and the hype surrounding Phase 4, Endgame was able to claw it’s way to the top.
The news came from out of San Diego Comic as Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige shared the news to kick off the conference in Hall H.
It didn’t look like this would come to fruition any time soon as even the re-release didn’t rake in an exceedingly large amount of cash at first glance. The extra money comes in with a readjustment of the totals from its release. Films often get a bit of a boost before leaving theatres as the sales totals are retallied to more accurately reflect their overall cumulative sales. By doing this, Marvel and Disney were able to find enough unaccounted for sales to help Avengers: Endgame to topple its competition.
This news only further cements the lasting legacy that Avengers: Endgame and the overarching MCU has carved out for itself over the last decade. It doesn’t stop there as Feige went on to announce a whole new slate of Marvel films and television shows coming in the next two years. These include a sequel to Doctor Strange, a new Thor film, and the announcement of a Shang-Chi, Black Widow and Blade films are all in the works. That slate will be supported by a marvelous number of Disney+ shows that directly tie into the Marvel Cinematic universe.
There was no mention of Avengers for phase 4, but after the events of Avengers: Endgame it will likely be some time before we see them assemble again.
