Avatar director James Cameron joined an exclusive club on Sunday, January 22, including himself. James reached a milestone as the only director in history with three movies that have crossed a vast money benchmark.

That milestone is the $2-billion line that his latest film, Avatar: The Way of Water, crossed Sunday. This marks the director’s third flick to have achieved it at the international box office. His other two money-pulling big-screen projects are Avatar ($2.9B) and Titanic ($2.1B).

It took 5,233 days for James’ first milestone flick, Titanic, to cross the $2 billion line. However, Avatar and Avatar 2 crossed the benchmark in 47 days and 37 days, respectively.

As James Cameron’s latest installment has become profitable, the chances of a sequel are high. Meanwhile, the flick got off to a slow start when it opened on December 16.

Other Movies Have Crossed The Benchmark

Only three other films have passed the $2 billion mark and are all Disney-owned. Avengers: Endgame is #2 at $2.7B, Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens is at #4 with $2.071B, and Avengers: Infinity War is #5 at $2.052B. Avatar 2 is now the 6th highest-grossing movie ever.

Before his latest accomplishment, Avatar director James shared the space with the Russo Brothers. The duo directed both Avengers films and reached the $2 billion mark in 11 days with Endgame.

However, with three movies over the finish line, James surpassed them, creating a James Cameron exclusive club. James’ accomplishment is quite remarkable. It also ups the challenge for many present and upcoming directors to turn up their game and break the record.
