James Cameron’s epic film, Avatar, hit theaters in 2009. The critically-acclaimed sci-fi film smashed box office records that year. It became the highest-grossing film of all time (not adjusted for inflation). In addition to its box office success, the film also enjoyed critical success. It won three Oscars, two BAFTAs, and countless other awards. Now, the long-awaited sequel, Avatar 2: The Way Of Water, is scheduled to premiere in December 2022. In addition to some fan favorites from the original, the sequel also adds some new characters to the Avatar world. Some of the many exciting characters in Avatar 2: The Way Of Water stand out more than others.

10. Edie Falco As Human General Frances Ardmore

Among the new human characters joining the Avatar 2: The Way Of Water movie is General Frances Ardmore. Beloved Soprano actress Edie Falco will portray this exciting character. General Admore appears to be a villain so far. General Ardmore is the commander of the RDA, an organization of humans that posed a severe threat to Pandora in the first Avatar movie. Falco joined the film’s cast back in 2019, and her character may also appear in other upcoming sequels. The Avatar franchise has five planned films in total. Therefore, audiences may see Falco on the big screen a great deal over the next several years.

9. C.C.H. Pounder As Na’vi Mo’at Of The Omaticaya Clan

In the original Avatar movie, Emmy-nominated actress C.C.H. Pounder portrayed the Na’vi character Mo’at. In addition to being Neytiri’s mother, Mo’at is also a spiritual leader in the Omaticaya clan. The powerful psychic will return in Avatar 2: The Way Of Water, with C.C.H. Pounder reprising the role. Like many of the exciting characters from the original film, Mo’at will appear in all of the upcoming Avatar franchise sequels. In Avatar 2, fans will see her working alongside her adult daughter, Neytiri, and her partner, Jake Sully, as they fight to protect their clan.

8. Michelle Yeoh As Human Scientist Dr. Karina Mogue

Actress Michelle Yeoh is best known for her work in Crazy Rich Asians and Star Trek: Discovery. However, the actress will now add some of the Avatar films to her list of acting credits. The actress will make her franchise debut in Avatar 2: The Way Of Water as one of the new human characters. Dr. Karina Mogue is a scientist, but little is known about how she will specifically factor into the Avatar 2 story at this point. This human character will also reappear in at least one of the other upcoming sequels, but sources haven’t confirmed exactly how many films will feature her.

7. Oona Chaplin As Mysterious Na’vi Character Varang

Some exciting characters from Avatar 2: The Way Of Water are intriguing because of how little fans know about them so far. This is the case with the new Na’vi character, Varang. Game Of Thrones actress Oona Chaplin will play this new character in Avatar 2 and the other three planned sequels. However, no one is certain how Varang factors into the Neytiri and Jake Sully story or even which clan of Na’vi she belongs to. There is some speculation that she will be an essential member of the new Metkayina clan, but fans may have to wait until the movie premieres to find out.

6. Kate Winslet As Na’vi Ronal Of The Metkayina Clan

Ronal is one of the most interesting new characters in Avatar 2: The Way Of Water. Ronal is a member of the reef-dwelling Metkayina, a Na’vi clan brand new to the franchise. Titanic actress Kate Winslet portrayed the free-diving character and was reported excited to be working with director James Cameron again. Impressively, Kate Winsley performed all her own stunts for the film and learned to hold her breath for a nearly inhuman amount of time. In fact, she broke Tom Cruise’s previously undefeated breath-hold record, coming in at a staggering seven minutes. Her dedication to the role is sure to make Ronal a compelling character.

5. Stephen Lang As Human Colonel Quaritch

In the original Avatar movie, actor Stephen Lang played a human villain named Colonel Quaritch. He was the RDA chief of security, but he perished in the first film. Fans may be surprised that he will return in Avatar 2: The Way Of Water, but the reasoning is quite simple. In the world of Pandora, consciousness can be transferred between avatars. Thus, Colonel Quaritch was able to transfer his consciousness and survive. It’s unclear exactly how he will factor into the Avatar 2 story, but it appears that the security chief will also be a part of the other three Avatar sequels.

4. Cliff Curtis As Na’vi Metkayina Clan Leader Tonowari

The newest Na’vi clan, the Metkayina, appears to have many exciting characters to offer. Among them is Tonowari, a strong leader who helps protect and organize his reef-dwelling people. Actor Cliff Curtis will portray the Na’vi leader in Avatar 2: The Way Of Water and the three other upcoming Avatar sequels. Very few confirmed details exist about the new Na’vi clan, but fans are curious to see how they will interact with the established characters from the first film. The Metkayina are also a big part of how director James Cameron got to showcase cutting-edge underwater filming technology in this emerging movie franchise.

3. Sigourney Weaver As Human/Na’vi Dr. Grace Augustine

Fans loved Sigourney Weaver’s character in the original Avatar, and it appears that Dr. Grace Augustine will return in Avatar 2: The Way Of Water and the other upcoming sequels. Though this character died in the first movie, the same rules that allow the villainous Colonel Quaritch to return to the world of Pandora come into play for Dr. Augustine. It remains to be seen whether or not the xenobotanist will continue her quest to establish peace between the humans and the Na’vi. However, the return of her nemesis Quaritch suggests that some familiar themes from the original film will come into play.

2. Sam Worthington As Human/Na’vi Jake Sully

Jake Sully was the original bridge between the Na’vi and the humans in the first Avatar film, and he returns in the sequel, Avatar 2, as a father and leader of his clan. He and Neytiri have started a family of their own. Unsurprisingly, protecting that family is a driving force behind Jake’s actions. Actor Sam Worthington returns to reprise this role from the original film. In addition to the Avatar franchise, Worthington is known for several other roles. He starred as Marcus Wright in Terminator Salvation and Perseus in Clash Of The Titans.

1. Zoe Saldana As Na’vi Warrior Neytiri

Zoe Saldana has risen to the level of leading-lady royalty in the sci-fi movie genre, so it’s no surprise that the actress will return in Avatar 2: The Way Of Water. Her original role as Na’vi warrior Neytiri was perfect for her, and she’ll reprise that role in each of the upcoming Avatar sequels. The dynamic female protagonist is one of the most exciting characters in the Avatar franchise, and fans are already voicing their approval for her updated aesthetic in the new movie. In addition to being a skilled fighter, Neytiri is now also a mother. This gives her an even more noble cause to stand for in the Na’vi people’s fight to preserve their homeland.
