You never know if what you do in life will break new ground. For Ava DuVernay, the Oscar-nominated director known for Selma, is the first Black woman to get her Ben & Jerry’s ice cream flavor, featuring her face on the cover of the pint. The flavor is called Lights! Caramel! Action!, which contains vanilla ice cream with salted caramel swirls, graham cracker swirls, and chocolate chip cookie dough. It will be available in dairy and non-dairy.
In a statement (via Variety), Ava DuVernay cited a mix of Ben & Jerry’s “commitment to social justice” and ice cream being a “simple joy of life” that led to this collaboration. When it came to her hefty flavor that is full of various flavors, she worked with “food scientists to create a flavor with all the ingredients that I personally love.”
Selma director Ava DuVernay gets her own Ben & Jerry’s ice cream flavor
Ben & Jerry’s has made a name for itself for its values, which was why the Ava DuVernay flavor aids charity efforts. A part of the proceeds will go to the director’s non-profit, Array Alliance. The organization, which was formed in 2011, uplifts the work of artists in marginalized communities, with a focus on people of color and women filmmakers.
Lights! Camera! Action! starts shipping pints in January 2023 and in available in select stores. You can see if it is available in your area or wait until you can get a pint shipped to you next month.
