Nearly 12 years and 139 chapters later, Attack on Titan has finally drawn to a close (or at least the manga version, the anime is getting a second part to its final season coming in the future). The final chapter of the long-running manga series that started eleven years ago in September 2009 has published its final chapter.
We won’t spoil the ending – although judging by initial reactions, fans are not overly happy with the way the story has wrapped up. It’s incredibly difficult to please everyone or deliver a finale that can be considered satisfactory – just ask Game of Thrones Season 8 – as fans understandably have become very invested in the narrative. Perhaps many of these grievances are down to the absence of fan fulfillment – people have their own ideas of how the story should finish, and any deviation from those ideas is considered a let-down.
But whatever fans think, there’s no denying that the series has been one of the biggest manga and anime products in recent years, and it will be missed. It’s a strange thing to consider the absence of one of Japan’s most high-profile products being a thing of the past, as it feels like ages ago (and it was) since we were talking about how Attack on Titan was hot onto streaming services with the release of its first season of the anime.
The anime is still going – it was recently announced that its final season would be getting a second part to adequately wrap up the storyline. It feels very Harry Potter: Deathly Hallows or Hunger Games: Mockingjay, but if it provides the studio ample time to make the remaining episodes that much better then good – bringing it back to Game of Thrones again, but trying to wrap up too much in a short space of time can backfire horribly.
