As I was glancing through the various press releases I received today, I saw the words “destructible 3D pixel-art world” and immediately stopped. Whatever this was, now has my attention. It turned out to be an announcement for a new action role-playing game titled, Unsouled. I will admit that I went and checked to see if souled is, in fact, a word, and much to my surprise it is. Anyway, Unsouled is a one-person project, the creation of Jinsub Jung. The publisher is PQube. You can check out the announcement trailer below:
I’m getting some Dark Souls vibes. The ascetic also reminds me a lot of Death’s Gambit. The description of the game includes the phrase “well-timed parry”. Which tells me I will probably be terrible at Unsouled. But I am definitely going to be playing it anyway. The top-down(ish) perspective is an odd choice. It should help Unsouled stand out from similar games.
The press release seems to indicate you can choose to play as either a male or female character, so that’s a nice addition. Beyond that, it doesn’t really expand on anything, plot-wise. If there is going to be a narrative, we will have to wait for it to be revealed. It might opt for environmental storytelling, which is pretty popular these days.
As long as Unsouled has tight controls and well thought out mechanics, I doubt anyone will worry too much about anything else anyway. The game is scheduled to be part of the lineup of GX London 2019. Other than that, we will have to wait for additional information. I will be keeping an eye on this one. Unsouled is expected to release on Steam in the Spring of 2020. So we have quite a bit of a wait before we will get our hands on this Atmospheric Action-RPG.
