Over the weekend, Hi-Rez Studios held their SMITE World Championship for Season 8. Hundreds of thousands of fans tuned in to the SMITE World Championship. The best SMITE players met to face off in a single-elimination, best of five in the eSports Lan tournament.

The tournament led up to the finals held on the 9th of January. The finals took place in front of 120,000 Twitch and Youtube viewers, seeing the Atlantis Leviathans victory over the Tartarus Titans.

In recent months, the Tartarus Titans, led by Captian Paul ‘Paul’ Berger, had been in great shape, qualifying straight into the SMITE World Championship semi-finals after winning the latest playoff matches. Including a match against the Leviathans, which they would take the victory.

A championship with top skill

Fates changed yesterday, even with successes. The Titans would be met with a rival that would use top skill and maybe a touch of revenge. However, the three intense rounds, two of which neared the 30-minute mark, would see the Leviathans take the victory. As a result, the Leviathans would take home the SMITE world championship and also take a nice $300,00.

By seizing victory, the Atlantis Leviathans would also become the first Latin-American team to win the SMITE World Championship, making history within the series. Furthermore, the championship would come off the heels of a significant change the year prior.

A change for the future of eSports

Previously, Hi-Rez Studios announced that all eight participating teams were owned and operated by the organization. Hi-Rez Studios hopes this change will bring major improvements to the league’s sustainability, pro player revenue opportunities, and overall quality of life.

Let’s congratulate the Atlantis Leviathans on their victory and all the other team’s effort in the tournament. Hopefully, the changes that Hi-Rez Studios has made will help the SMITE World Championship grow and provide better benefits for these players going on into the future. In addition, maybe the changes that happen here will promote more significant changes within the esports community into the future.
