There is such a wide array of distinctive bosses in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla that they all require different approaches. This is no different when it comes to Leofrith’s boss fight when you’re out searching for Ceolbert. A mild scrimmage is taking place on the Isle of Waifs, where Eivor must go to find the Mercian son of Ceolwulf. Upon finding the pair preparing to duel, Eivor steps in for Ceolbert to battle Leofrith himself. From there, one of the game’s most essential brawls commences, and I’ll show you how to deal with him.

Amid the clash between Eivor and Leofrith lie debris from the battle taking place before your arrival. This boss fight is the highlight for the “Heavy is the Head” mission, but your ending decision on whether to kill or spare him is much more impactful. That part will come later, though.

“To Be Prepared is Half the Victory”

For now, there are a few things to keep in mind when fighting Leofrith. He wields a longsword of agitating strength; Leofrith is too quick with dodge movements; and a mean backhand that would make somebody’s grandmother proud. In addition to his lack of weaponry, he also doesn’t carry a bow and quiver. Realistically, the odds are more in your favor since Eivor can use any weapon he/she may choose, while Leofrith remains limited. Make sure you come prepared with a full capacity of health items and arrows, for you’ll need all of them when Leofrith becomes irritated in combat.

With his longsword, Leofrith will usually engage in powerful swings that can be blocked. At some point, it can be charged up to deal lethal damage to Eivor. Those are the ones you need to watch out for. Indicated by the red hue of the heavy attack, it’s best to dodge until he gives out on striking. This will be the perfect opportunity to slash his health down a blood smidge or two. But you must be extra wary of his backhand: it’s typically after a mild swing at Eivor, with the back of his left hand sending our Finest Viking backward a couple of steps.

Furthermore, it’s going to take more than just a few moves to take down Leofrith. He’s not weak, but he’s also not the brightest. With Eivor’s bow and quiver of arrows – while aiming – you can see two weak points that can severely injure your opponent. One is on his right foot, and the other on his left elbow. If you’re able to land a shot (and you should since Leofrith is terrible at blocking arrows), Leofrith will kneel, leaving him wide open for a Stun Attack. The Stun Attacks and dodge-strikes should be overwhelmingly effective in your effort to defeat Leofrith. If not, heal yourself up by moving away from your foe for a breather. Also, depending on what set of abilities and skills you have, definitely use those as well.

Leofrith’s Fate in Valhalla

Once defeated, you’ll have a choice to make. Either Leofrith can pray to his god (Kill) or he can be told the truth of his royal betrayal and not be executed (Spare). If you Kill Leofrith, the story will continue with Ceolbert being saved. But, this isn’t the right choice to make per se. Instead, Spare Leofrith and Eivor will tell him that his king, King Burgred of Mercia, has gone behind Leofrith’s back. Being his thegn, Leofrith feels deceived, and thanks Eivor for his kindness.

In exchange, he does the same for you by revealing the location of a scroll with Eivor’s name on it. If discovered, a group of Zealots will endlessly hunt down Eivor for the rest of the game. But if you can get to it in time, you can destroy the scroll and ensure an extra layer of safe reassurance for yourself when out and about in England. The scroll is located in a bowl at the foot of a statue in Venonis. If you miss your chance, you’ll find yourself encountering these Zealots from time to time as you continue your playthrough of Valhalla. They’re certainly not difficult to deal with, though. If anything, they’re living pawns awaiting to be slaughtered sorely for the sake of XP.

Given these points, Leofrith should be fairly easy to fight against. His story will continue if Spared, for he will embark on a path of vengeance against his former king. I read somewhere that you can find him in Lincolnshire or Lunden somewhere, but I haven’t been able to reunite with him myself. It’s definitely not worth killing him since you’ll be aware of the Zealots’ never-ending hunt for you.
